Art prof.'s works in exhibition
Works by Priscilla A. Smith, art, are on display through December
at Salisbury Alternative Space, 205 Main St., Salisbury, Md.
"A Cautionary Tale" is the theme of the exhibit of 16-x-20
chromogenic prints, which, according to Smith, "explore the archetypal
conflict between rational control and impulse. The prints demonstrate
a quality of texture and palette unique to the color printing process.
"The tension between rational control and emotional impulse has
been the impetus for art and meditation since the ancient Greeks
detailed the struggle between Apollo and Dionysus," Smith said.
"More recently, Jung and other psychoanalysts saw the psyche as
being split into two opposing impulses-one which seeks pleasure, joy
and freedom from repression and one which embraces rational
consciousness and control.
"This body of work is based on that conflict as it explores the
sometimes playful, ironic and often anguished struggle between
rational control and emotional impulse. These images describe this
most elemental conflict in our lives," she said.
Smith graduated cum laude with a bachelor of fine arts degree
from Texas Tech University in Lubbock in 1980 and received a master of
fine arts degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign in 1985.
Before coming to Delaware, she taught at Colgate, Syracuse and
East Texas State universities and the University of Illinois.
She has had solo shows in Texas, New York, Colorado and Delaware
and has had works included in numerous national and international
group exhibitions. Her work is in the collections of American Express,
the University of Illinois and the Munson-Proctor-Williams Art
Institute, among others.
She is the recipient of a Delaware State Arts Council individual
artist fellowship and a University Research Grant for portraits of
senior athletes.
