Information on end-of-the-year holiday recess schedule

The University will observe a holiday recess between Dec. 25 and

        * Monday, Jan. 1
          Traditional holiday
        * Tuesday, Jan. 2
          Offices open at 8 a.m.

Salaried staff employees who work on a holiday will be paid for
the hours worked at time-and-one-half in addition to the regular pay
or will be given compensatory time off at time-and-one-half. The dates
are to be mutually agreed upon by the employee and supervisor.
Holiday pay provisions for hourly employees are outlined in the
collective bargaining agreements.
Recognizing the need for certain services to continue during the
recess, the following departments will operate on a limited schedule:

Campus Mail
Regular mail delivery will continue through Friday, Dec. 22. Any
additional outgoing mail (USPS) should be brought to the Mail Center
in the General Services Building by 3:15 p.m., Friday, Dec. 22. The
facility will be open on Dec. 27, 28 and 29, and mail can be picked up
between 8 a.m.-noon on those days. There will be very limited
processing of outgoing mail. Any first-class outgoing mail will be
processed only on Friday, Dec. 29. Bulk mail cannot be processed
during the recess because of limited staffing.
During the week of Jan. 2-5, there will be one delivery each day
due to the volume received during the break.
FedEx, UPS and other courier-delivered packages will be accepted
and stored in Campus Mail. Recipients who have not picked up the
packages beforehand will be called. If other special arrangements
required, please call 831-2158.

Facilities Management
Facilities Management will make every effort to heat buildings in
an "off hours" mode that will result in reduced indoor temperatures.
In addition, such other services as waste removal and custodial will
be curtailed. Offices and laboratories intending to be in operation
for any part of the recess should contact Facilities Management at 831-
1141 to make the necessary arrangements for services. Very limited
service will be available Dec. 27-30 by contacting 831-1141 or "FIXIT"
on e-mail. Normal weekend skeleton service will be available the
remaining days for emergencies only.

Call forwarding
Offices are encouraged to alter the voice mail messages on their
main line to reflect holiday recess. A sample greeting would be: "You
have reached the Department of Geography at the University of
Delaware. Our offices are closed for the holidays. Normal office hours
will resume on Jan. 2. Please call back then, or leave a message after
the tone and your call will be returned after the holiday recess."
Individuals also are encouraged to reflect the holiday recess in
their personal greetings. A sample greeting would be: "Hello, this is
Jane Doe of the Department of Geography at the University of Delaware.
I will be out of the office for the holidays from Dec. 22 through Jan.
1. Please leave your name, your phone number and a detailed message
after the tone. I will call you back when I return on Jan. 2."
Offices also may transfer their main lines to the University's
main line, 831-2000, during the holiday recess. DO NOT transfer phones
to 831-2000 before 5 p.m., Dec. 22. Transferred callers will hear a
recorded announcement of the holiday recess schedule, but no messages
will be taken.
To activate call forwarding from your main line, press 72; after
the confirmation tone, press 2000 and wait for the attendant to come
on before hanging up. Press 73 to deactivate call forwarding after the
recess is over. To confirm your main line has call forwarding
capability, press 72 from the main line. If a busy signal is heard
instead of a confirmation tone, the line does not have call
forwarding. Contact Telephone Services at 831-2411 before Dec. 15 to
have this capability turned on.

Emergencies
Emergency response personnel will be available and can be reached
by calling Public Safety at 831-2222.

Computing Center
All central computing systems and applications will be up and
available throughout the holiday period, with the following
exceptions:
        * Between 4 p.m., Sunday. Dec. 24, and 6 p.m., Monday, Dec.
25, no tape mounts or other operation intervention will be
          available on the central systems.
        * Between 7 a.m.-1 p.m., Thrusday, Dec. 28, there will be a
full facility shutdown. No central computing systems will be
          available during that time.
        * Preventive maintenance on the building electrical systems is
          scheduled between 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday-Thursday, Dec. 27-
          28. On both days during these times, computer systems may be
interrupted on short notice if electrical system repairs are
          required.
