Diversity
Report of activities in 1994-95

The Office of Affirmative Action and Multicultural Programs
serves as the administrative arm of the Commission to Promote Racial
and Cultural Diversity.
According to Maxine Colm, vice president for employee relations,
a number of recommendations contained in the 1994-95 commission
report are either in place or in the process of implementation. These
include:
   * Installation of a "hotline" in the Campus Diversity Unit at the
start of the fall semester so that lesbian, gay and bisexual
students and staff can be apprised of University and community
resources that support their needs. The hotline also provides
information about upcoming events of interest to the group.
   * The assistant vice president for administration is working with
ARAmark to provide "kosher-equivalent" food selections in the
     residence halls.
   * Carillon music is being reviewed to ensure that selections are
sensitive to diverse groups, especially at the holiday season.
   * New diversity education workshops are being designed to assist
managers to supervise an increasingly diverse workforce.
   * The Office of Affirmative Action and Multicultural Programs is
working with the University Provost and the college deans to
develop incentives to increase the number of African-American and
Hispanic faculty members, as well as Asian-Americans in senior-
     level positions.
