On Dec. 8; Chorale to appear in concert with Judy Collins
To celebrate the holiday season, the University of Delaware
Chorale, under the direction of Patrick Evans, will present two
musical programs in December.
The Chorale will present a seasonal concert at 8 p.m., Friday,
Dec. 1, in the Newark United Methodist Church on Main Street. The
program will include seasonal carols, Hebrew Renaissance music, a Bach
cantata and "A Night of Snow" by Poulenc. David Herman, chairperson of
the department, will be the organist, and students and faculty will be
soloists. The concert is free and open to the public.
The chorale also has been invited to perform at the Judy Collins
holiday concert, scheduled at 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, in the Bob
Carpenter Center. The members will begin the concert with a short
program of music and also perform with Collins in carols and other
selections, including "Amazing Grace," one of her signature songs.
Evans has been contacted by Collins' manager and musical
director, who is sending musical arrangements for the choral group to
use to sing with Collins.
Composed of 40 singers, 21 men and 19 women, the University
Chorale is the oldest existing singing group on campus. The group is
about evenly divided between music majors and other disciplines, and
the students range from freshmen to graduate students, Evans said. All
the singers must audition and meet for two, two-hour classes a week
for the one-credit course.
Evans, who joined the music department faculty from Florida State
University one year ago, has high praise for the group. "The chorale
is exciting from a musical standpoint. The members love to sing and
are committed and serious about it. They work hard outside of class,
learning the music, and come prepared to work hard during class. Not
only do we rehearse music, we talk about music and discuss various
composers and their works," Evans said.
The University of Delaware Chorale served as host to a SongFest
for Parents' Day, featuring various campus singing groups. In recent
years, the choir has performed in Finland, the Czech Republic and
Slovakia, at the White House, in St. Patrick's Cathedral and as part
of the Hadley Memorial Concert Series in Pennsylvania.
Tickets for the Judy Collins holiday concert are $17.50 for the
general public; $15 for senior citizens, UD faculty and staff and $12
for UD students with ID. Tickets are on sale at the Carpenter Center
and Perkins Student Center box offices or by telephone through
Ticketmaster at 984-2000. A convenience charge may apply.
