Rebecca Walker at Bookstore on Monday
Rebecca Walker, named one of Time magazine's 50 most promising
leaders age 40 and under, will read from and sign copies of her new
book, To Be Real: Telling the Truth and Changing the Face of Feminism,
beginning at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 13, in the University Bookstore. Her
UD appearance is the only college or university stop planned on her 18-
city, book-signing tour.
Walker, daughter of novelist Alice Walker and the goddaughter of
Gloria Steinem, describes herself as a Third Wave (generation)
feminist. To Be Real, a collection of essays by modern-day feminists,
is a "testament to the realities that there is no betrayal in being
yourself, home must be made within and the best communities are those
built on mutual respect," Walker said.
The book explores the increasing amount of contradictory
information about what it is to be a feminist. The rules and
categories that have developed from within the movement have created
divisions and, often with them, confusion and discord. It explores the
ambiguities and contradictions plaguing a new wave of feminists in
both their personal and professional lives and encourages readers "to
reach into the spaces of yourself where you are most afraid to go, to
create a feminist space in which you can be real."
Walker is a 1992 graduate of Yale University and the co-founder
of Third Wave Direct Action Corp., a national nonprofit organization
dedicated to assisting female leaders. The organization's current
project, Third Wave On Line, is aimed at connecting young women in
cyberspace.
Walker was named Feminist of the Year by the Feminist Majority
and is a contributing editor to Ms. magazine. She also has written
articles for Harpers, Essence, Sassy, The Black Scholar and Spin.
