New sabbatical policy approved
The Faculty Senate on Monday approved the appointment of new
committee members and an amendment to the Faculty Handbook relative to
qualifications for sabbatical leave.
However, the senators sent back to committee a proposed policy on
academic conflicts of interest.
Approved for appointment to Faculty Senate committees are Mary
Carroll, nursing, Library Committee; Mir Islam, animal and food
sciences, Diversity and Affirmative Action; Lesa Griffiths, animal and
food sciences, Student and Faculty Honors; Elizabeth Perse,
communication, Undergraduate Studies; Aaron Abraham and Jerome Brown,
physical education, Student Life; Virginia Redmond, recreation,
Library; Barbara Viera, physical education, Student and Faculty
Honors; and James Richards, physical education, Graduate Studies.
The senators approved amending the Faculty Handbook section on
personnel policies for faculty qualifications for sabbatical leave.
The amendment reads: "The credit toward a sabbatical leave does
not begin to accumulate until the beginning of the next appointment
semester [rather than year, which was previously the case] after
returning from sabbatical leave."
This change enables faculty who return from a fall sabbatical to
immediately begin earning credit for their next sabbatical during the
next semester, rather than the following fall.
