Music department gets nod for master's in performance
The University's Master of Music in Performance degree recently
received final approval from the National Association of Schools of
Music (NASM), the accrediting organization in the field, according to
music department chairperson David Herman.
Initial NASM approval was given in 1991 when the program was
first established. Final approval is awarded by the NASM Committee on
Accreditation after a program is in place, is successful and has
graduated its first students.
"Prior to 1991, the music department did not offer a graduate
program. We felt it was part of our mission and responsibility to
offer opportunities in Delaware for graduate studies in music," Herman
said.
The program, which is available in almost all instruments, voice
and instrumental conducting, graduated its first class in 1992.
Another program, the Master of Music for Teaching, grades K-12,
also is offered for music educators and will have its first graduates
in January 1996. This program, now in the NASM initial review stage,
is working toward final approval.
