Newark Forum
"The Public Nature of Main Street and What This Means to Us" is
the theme of an open forum at 7 p.m., Oct. 27, at Heritage Hall, in
the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 East Main St. in Newark.
The forum will explore the many aspects of Main Street and its
role as a meeting ground for groups within the community.
Newark Mayor Ron Gardner will make opening remarks, and the forum
speaker will be David Ames, director of the University's Center for
Historic Architecture and Engineering. A panel discussion, moderated
by Andrew Zimmerman, social science educator at Delaware Technical and
Community College, will follow.
Panel members are Jan Baty, Newark Planning Commission; Rick
Armitage, director of state and local government relations at the
University; Bill Wilhelm, chef/ manager of 90 East Main St. Cafe;
Terry Foreman, crafter and outdoor festival coordinator of the Newark
Arts Alliance; Sid Codding, Newark High School junior; and a
University of Delaware student.
The forum is sponsored by the Friends of Newark, in conjunction
with the Old Newark Civic Association and the Newark Arts Alliance,
with funding from the City of Newark.
Homecoming run
The fourth annual Campus-Run-Around run/walk begins at 9:30 a.m.,
Saturday, Oct. 22, at the President's House, 47 Kent Way.
All participants will receive a race T-shirt and are eligible to
win random prizes. Individuals may register in person at the Carpenter
Sports Building, or call 831-1437 to receive an application via campus
mail.
Entry fee is $10, or employees may use "wellness dollars."
Garden line service
Starting Nov. 1, the New Castle County Delaware Cooperative
Extension's Garden Line phone service, at 831-8862, will be open for
calls from 9 a.m.-noon on Tuesdays only. A master gardener volunteer
will answer home lawn, garden and pest questions.
No messages for return calls will be taken during this
fall/winter schedule.
B&G special brunch
The Blue and Gold Club is featuring activities to accompany each
home football game.
A breakfast buffet is offered before each game from 10:45 a.m.-
12:15 p.m. Cost is $9.50 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-11 and
free for children under 5. The price includes bus transportation to
and from the game.
The club also will offer catering for tailgates and a happy hour
in the Tavern after the game. Call UD1-CLUB for details, reservations
or a membership application.
Pumpkin contest
The New Castle County Master Gardeners, 4-H and Agway will host
The Great Pumpkin Contest from 9-10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 22, at 218
East Main St. in Newark.
Children up to 18 years of age can compete for ribbons and door
prizes by bringing a decorated pumpkin to Agway.For a registration

Homework seminar
Marcia Tietbohl, psychology practicum student, will address
parents with children in the College School on "Getting Homework Done"
at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, in 311 Willard Hall Education Building.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Open house
The Academic Services Center is celebrating its move to the
George Evans House at 5 West Main St.
There will be an open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, Oct.
27. The public is invited.
Bookstore invitation
Members of the University community are invited to celebrate the
renovation of the University Bookstore at an open house from 2-6 p.m.,
Wednesday, Oct. 26. Join faculty member and author Carol Hoffecker,
who will be signing copies of her latest book, and YoUDee, the Blue
Hen mascot, will be present from 2-4 p.m.
There also will be a drawing for such prizes as a stereo cassette
player, a bicycle and portable CD player.
