Six new chairs serve in College of Arts and Science

     Six faculty members began duties as department chairpersons in
the College of Arts and Science.
     Bill Lawson, the first African-American chairperson at the
University, heads the Department of Philosophy. A Vietnam veteran who
earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Lawson is a specialist in African-
American philosophy and social and political philosophy. The author of
two books and numerous articles in professional journals, he came to
the University as an assistant professor in 1986 and was promoted to
associate professor in 1992.
     Errol Lloyd chairs the Department of Computer and Information
Sciences. He earned his bachelor's degree in both computer science and
mathematics at Pennsylvania State University and his master's and
doctoral degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After
teaching at the University of Pittsburgh, he came to Delaware as an
associate professor in 1989, following a year as program director for
computer and computational theory at the National Science Foundation.
In 1994, Lloyd won the University's excellence-in-teaching award. His
research specialty is design and analysis of algorithms.
     George Miller is new chairperson of the Department of English. A
member of the Delaware faculty since 1969, he has served as director
of the Writing Program and associate chairperson of the Department of
English. Miller earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from
Pennsylvania State University and his doctorate from the University of
Connecticut. The author or co-author of seven books, Miller has been
involved heavily in teaching and consulting in writing programs at the
University, in public schools and other institutions across the
country. He has cataloged watermarks found on papers used in America
in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
     Henry Glyde is returning after several years for a second term as
chairperson of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Glyde earned
his bachelor's degree at the University of Alberta and his doctorate
at Oxford University. A Rhodes Scholar with postdoctoral research
experience in Belgium and the United Kingdom, he held positions at
Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., the International Development Research
Center and the University of Ottawa, Canada, before joining the
University of Delaware as professor and chairperson of the Department
of Physics and Astronomy in 1982. His research on neutron scattering
studies of quantum liquids and solids makes him a regular research
collaborator at national laboratories in Europe and the U.S.
     Joseph Pika is chairperson of the Department of Political Science
and International Relations. Pika holds bachelor's and master's
degrees from the Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate from the
University of Wisconsin. He has been at the University since 1981, has
served as associate chairperson of the department since 1989 and as
executive director of the Governor's Commission on Government
Reorganization and Effectiveness for the State of Delaware. He is a
past recipient of both the University's excellence-in-teaching and
excellence-in-advising awards. Pika is the author or co-author of
three books and numerous articles in professional journals on the U.S.
presidency.
     Robert Rothman, chairperson of the Department of Sociology and
Criminal Justice, began his Delaware career in 1967. He earned his
bachelor's degree at the State University of New York College of
Buffalo, his master's degree at Michigan State University and his
doctorate at Purdue University. The author or co-author of four books,
Rothman has had extensive international experience. His specialty is
social stratification and mobility.
