Mendelssohn Quartet in anniversary concert Nov. 1

The Mendelssohn String Quartet will celebrate its fifth
anniversary as the UD's quartet-in-residence with a special
anniversary concert at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the Loudis Recital
Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
The program will feature violinists Nick Eanet and Nicholas Mann,
cellist March Rosen and the ensemble's new violist Maria Lambros.
Selections for the anniversary concert include Haydn's String
Quartet Op. 103, Smetana's String Quartet in e minor, "From My Life,"
and Ned Rorem's Scenes from Childhood For String Quartet, oboe, horn
and piano. The latter piece also will feature Lloyd Shorter, Cynthia
Carr and Julie Nishimura.
The Mendelssohn String Quartet has established a reputation as an
imaginative, vital and exciting ensemble. During the 1993-94 concert
season, the ensemble presented a series at New York's Merkin Concert
Hall, where it has served as quartet-in-residence since its formation
in 1979. In addition to its role on the Newark campus, the ensemble
also continues as the Blodgett Artists in Residence at Harvard
University.
While many of the quartet's performances include works by the
masters, the members have a strong interest in contemporary music and
the ensemble has given world premiers of many works commissioned by
and for them.
The quartet has made several recordings on the Musical Heritage
Society/Music Masters label, including Mozart and Weber clarinet
quintets with Charles Neidich and the first quartet of Arnold
Schoenberg.
The string quartet has appeared throughout North America and
performs frequently in Europe.
Distinguished guests who have appeared wth the quartet in recent
years include pianists Rudolf Firkusny, Claude Frank, Ursula Oppens,
Perter Serkin and Menahem Pressler; sopranos Evelyn Lear, Phyllis Bryn-
Julson and Lucy Shelton; violinists Jaime Laredo and Robert Mann;
violist Michael Tree; cellists Janos Staker, David Soyer and Bonnie
Hampton; flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal; and clarinetist Richard Stolzman.
Tickets for the anniversary concert on campus are $7.50 for
adults; $5 for faculty, staff and senior citizens; and $2 for
students.
Tickets may be reserved in advance by calling 831-2204. Tickets
also will be available at the door. A special subscription price is
available to those purchasing tickets to both this concert and the
Mendelssohn String Quartet's April 4 concert.
