Homecoming '94; 'Catch the UD spirit'
Harrington Beach will take on a new appearance Friday, Oct. 21,
as the annual Homecoming Carnival begins at 3 p.m.
The three main activities will include the carnival, a pep rally
and bonfire.
A major attraction of this year's event is the chance to win two
round-trip tickets to anywhere in the continental U.S., compliments of
Continental Airlines.
To be eligible, students must register with a UD#1 Card between 3-
6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, at the registration stands located on
Harrington Beach. The winner will be announced during the Homecoming
game on Saturday, Oct. 22.
More than 30 events are planned for the carnival section of the
festival, including a "Splatter Dome," where participants dodge paint
pellets, and a "Pie in the Face" booth.
To get the crowd into the year's theme "Catch the UD Spirit," the
pep rally will feature the cheerleaders, YoUDee, the Fightin' Blue Hen
mascot, the University of Delaware Marching Band and the Delaware
Precision Dance Team. President David P. Roselle and Head Football
Coach Harold "Tubby" Raymond also will be present and give remarks.
The royal crowning of the Homecoming king and queen will begin at
the rally, when the top three finalists of each division will be
announced. The actual crowning will take place during the Homecoming
game in Delaware Stadium.
Concluding the rally will be a traditional bonfire, to be lit by
the co-captains of the football team.
In order to advance school spirit and help the game crowd get
loud, during the carnival and pep rally cheerleaders will distribute
more than 1,000 blue and gold megaphones. These are being provided by
the Homecoming Planning Committee, with assistance from Promotions
Plus of Newark.
According to Lisa Meyerowitz, a senior, Panhellenic secretary and
co-chairperson of Homecoming Committee, "We wanted to really
encourage support of the Homecoming weekend activities, not just the
ones we are planning. We thought by giving away megaphones, we could
encourage people to make some noise at the game as well."
Regarding the carnival and pep rally, Interfraternity Council
Homecoming co-chairperson Bill Werde said, "We wanted to do something
different, so we added a disc jockey to the list of activities."
"This is going to be one of the biggest events on campus this
year, maybe even bigger than the upcoming Greek Games and Greek Week,"
IFC co-programmer Deitrich Schuhl said.
According to Christine E. Cook, coordinator of greek affairs,
"Attendance at last year's carnival and pep rally was estimated at
more than 2,500 persons. That included people from the University and
surrounding neighborhoods. The committee and organizers are hopeful
that more faculty, staff, students and neighbors will show their
Homecoming spirit by attending this year's events. Everyone is
welcome, and we're sure they will have a great time."
The event is sponsored by the Office of Greek Affairs and the
Panhellenic and Interfraternity councils.
