Semester in London program expands curriculum

The University of Delaware's Semester in London program is
expanding its core curriculum to include courses in economics,
sociology and political science and international relations, beginning
with the 1995 spring semester, according to Bill McNabb, director of
overseas studies.
A traditional humanities curriculum, focusing on art,
architecture, literature, music and theatre has been offered in London
for several years.
Several new courses are scheduled this spring:
        * In economics, a 300-level course, "The Making of the
European Economy," and a 400-level course, "Analysis of
          European Economic Performance";
        * In political science and international relations, a 300-
level course, "Contemporary British Politics," in addition
to the already existing 400-level course, "Problems of
          Western European Politics";
        * In sociology, a 200-level course, "Urban Sociology," which
will include such topics as urban ecology and urbanization
and will use the city of London as a laboratory, with
numerous field trips to sites in the area.
"All students can profit from the semester in London programs.
But the addition of a social science component brings a desirable new
dimension to the London semester program," McNabb said.
"Majors in economics, sociology and political science can now
meet their course requirements while having the invaluable experience
of studying and living overseas-an important asset for students who
look forward to careers in a global economy," McNabb added.
The Semester in London program, one of 10 University study-aboard
programs, is headquartered at the University of Delaware London
Centre, 49 Doughty St., in the Russell Square area. Housed in an
historic, four-story Georgian town house, the facility includes a
lecture and two seminar rooms, a student lounge, a computer lab and
offices.
The program is open to all undergraduate students and also
welcomes students from other institutions.
Students pay University of Delaware tuition, plus a modest fee
covering housing and airfare. The students' residence features flats
with bedrooms, bathrooms and fully equipped kitchens.
The application deadline for the spring 1995 program is Oct. 31,
although applications will be accepted until the program is filled.
