Homecoming to begin next week with golf, carnival
A wide range of activities by and for University alumni
celebrating their alma mater will be held at the annual Homecoming
celebration, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 21-23.
This year's events are highlighted by the football contest with
the University of Massachusetts at 1 p.m., Oct. 22, in Delaware
Stadium.
The weekend gets off to a start on Friday with the third annual
MBNA Blue Hen Celebrity Golf Classic, presented by Legg Mason,
benefiting athletic scholarships, at the DuPont Country Club.
At 3 p.m., there will be a carnival on Harrington Beach, located
behind the Perkins Student Center.
At 6:15 p.m., a pep rally and bonfire with the Homecoming king
and queen candidates and YoUDee, the University's Blue Hen mascot,
will be held in the same location.
From 6-8 p.m. there will be an alumni party at Alumni Hall on
Main Street.
Later that evening, the Alumni Homecoming Dance will be held from
9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Acierno Arena of the Bob Carpenter Center.
Performing will be the Fabulous Greaseband. Tickets for the dance are
$8 in advance or $12 at the door. Reserved tables are available for
the classes of 1969, 1974, 1984 and 1989.
Saturday activities begin at 8:30 a.m. with a 60th anniversary
celebration of the Laboratory Preschool at Alison Hall. At 9 a.m., the
College of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation will sponsor
the fourth annual UD Campus Run Around, a 5K run/walk.
The College of Business and Economics Alumni Award of Excellence
presentation and reception will be held at 10 a.m. in Clayton Hall.
The Homecoming float competition will be held on the perimeter of
Delaware Stadium starting at 10 a.m. Also at 10 a.m., the College of
Human Resources will hold an open house of the newly renovated Alumni
Room in Alison Hall, funded by alumni donations.
Tailgate parties, beginning at 11 a.m., will be held near
Delaware Stadium for the colleges of Arts and Science and Business and
Economics; the Department of Political Science and International
Relations; the Black Alumni Organization; and the classes of 1939,
1949, 1959, 1969, 1974, 1979 and 1984.
Custom miniature reproductions of campus landmark buildings will
be on sale under the west stands of the stadium from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
and at halftime.
Proceeds benefit the College of Human Resources Alumni
Association's 75th Anniversary Fund.
Kickoff time for the football game is 1 p.m. and block seating is
available for the classes of 1939, 1949, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984 and
1989. For ticket information, call UD1-HENS. Halftime festivities will
feature the Alumni Marching Band and the crowning of the Homecoming
king and queen.
After the game, a goalpost party will be held in the hospitality
tent behind the Delaware Field House, featuring a cash bar and food.
Wrapping up the weekend on Sunday, the University's Laboratory
Preschool will host a 60th anniversary reunion for alumni, faculty and
former preschool children and their families.
