$150,000 goal; Campaign to kick off Oct. 10 in Carpenter Center

Dear Colleagues:
     The University of Delaware's 1994 United Way Campaign will be
conducted from Oct. 10-31. This year, the University's goal is
$150,000; the overall campaign goal for the United Way of Delaware is
$15.750 million.
     Your pledge, in the form of a payroll deduction, will provide
needed community services on a year-round basis. By using the United
Way's expanded designation options, you can direct your gift to
community care, targeted care, specific care, neighboring United Ways
and eligible non-member nonprofit organizations.
     For additional information about the campaign, contact the United
Way solicitor in your unit or Employee Services at 831-6651. Please
give generously to the United Way. Your contribution will help to
continue the tradition of people helping people and enhance the
quality of life in our community.
     Thank you.

     Food, fun and entertainment will be offered to United Way
solicitors at the University's 1994 United Way Campaign kickoff,
scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 10, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
     The program will include a screening of the University's 1994
United Way video, which features more than a dozen members of the
campus community and YoUDee, the Blue Hen mascot, and a reception for
solicitors and guests in the Carpenter Club, starting at approximately
4 p.m.
     Representatives from units throughout the University have been
invited to help launch the campuswide effort. Entertainment will be
provided by the University of Delaware's Student Jazz Ensemble. In
addition, the results of the University's Pacesetters' campaign will
be announced.
     The Pacesetters' drive represents contributions from senior-level
administrators who made their gifts prior to the official kickoff to
support and promote the 1994 United Way campaign.
     As in past years, the University will conduct an incentive raffle
program to encourage employees to give to or increase their United Way
contributions.
     This year's raffle incentives include a four-day trip for two to
either Nassau, Freeport or Las Vegas, donated by Roberta Campbell,
Delaware '65, president of Campbell Travel Center. The trip includes
round-trip airfare, deluxe accommodations and transfers to and from
the hotel.
     If the winner desires, Campbell Travel Center will substitute an
$800 credit toward any other travel/vacation arrangements made through
the company. Travel arrangements must be scheduled within six months
of the raffle drawing. There is no cash equivalent for any unused
features.
     Other University incentives include:
        * Two tickets for motor coach transportation to New York City
          for two from Continuing Education, and weekend
          accommodations for two at the Virden Center in Lewes from
          and Conferences and Centers;
        * Two, one-year memberships to the Blue and Gold Club, a $25
          gift certificate of UD Dining Flex Dollars and a $50 gift
          certificate for dinner at the Blue and Gold Club, from
          Dining Services;
        * A Taste of Brandywine membership, from the U-Del Federal
          Credit Union;
        * Two free linen services at the Carpenter Sports Building,
          one individual or family membership to the Outdoor Pool and
          family skating passes, from the Recreation and Intramurals
          Program;
        * Two UD afghans and two UD sweatshirts, from the University
          Bookstore;
        * Tickets for two to attend two current season performances,
          from the Department of Theatre;
        * An original oil painting, from Grace Hendrickson, records
          technician in Accounts Payable;
        * An 8" x 10" color photograph, from the Office of Public
          Relations;
        * A gold parking permit for 1995-96, or any equivalent credit
          toward the cost of a gate-controlled lot or reserved parking
          space, from the Department of Public Safety;
        * Two gift certificates for two tickets to two performances at
          the Bob Carpenter Center; and
        * A week at 4-H camp for one child and two Delaware 4-H
          cookbooks, from Cooperative Extension.
     In addition, the raffle will include a family membership to the
Delaware Nature Society; a Winterthur yuletide candlelight tour for
two and passes for the Christmas floral and lighting extravaganza at
Longwood Gardens.
     Eligibility requirements are $5 per pay ($120 total) for the four-
day vacation to Freeport, Nassau or Las Vegas; $3 per pay ($72 total)
for University of Delaware trips; and $1 per pay ($24 total) for all
the other incentives.
     The raffle drawings will be conducted Nov. 14. Winners will be
invited to claim their prizes at the Solicitors Thank You reception,
hosted by President David P. Roselle on Nov. 22.
     To participate in the raffle, the individual's contribution must
be given to the unit solicitor and received in the Cashier's Office by
the close of business on Oct. 31, the final day of the campaign.
     Participants should note that the Internal Revenue Service
requires that employees who wish to deduct their full United Way
contribution on an itemized tax return, must decline to participate in
the raffle incentives in writing when they turn in their pledge cards
or donations.
     For employees who take part in the raffle and itemize tax
deductions, the specific amounts contributed to the United Way to
become eligible for the raffle cannot be deducted on one's tax return.
Raffle contributors who do not itemize their tax deductions are not
affected by this IRS ruling.
     For more information about the campaign or the incentives,
employees should contact the individual unit's United Way solicitor.
Questions also may be directed to United Way Campaign co-chairpersons
