Professor's challenge gift to benefit Morris Library
A library is the foundation of a university, and a university is
as great as its library. That is why I have taken an interest in the
library at the University of Delaware and wish to encourage others to
do so," according to Marvin Sussman, Unidel Professor Emeritus of
Human Behavior.
In keeping with his philosophy, Sussman has made a challenge gift
of $10,000 to the library, to be paid if matched by contributions from
other faculty and staff by Dec. 31. "My goal in establishing this
challenge is to make people more aware of the library and to revive
their interest and involvement in this important center of research
and learning at the University," Sussman said.
"I am pleased that a member of our faculty has demonstrated in
such a visible way his recognition of the importance of the library to
the University community," Charles Forbes, vice president for
development and alumni relations, said. "Through his generosity, Prof.
Sussman is providing other members of the University, who also value
the resouces of the library, an opportunity to double their
contribution. I hope many members of the University community will
wish to join Prof. Sussman and make a gift to the library as part of
the Employee Annual Campaign."
Before he retired in 1988, Sussman established the Marvin B.
Sussman Asklepios Book Fund in the Morris Library. Named after the
Greek god of healing, the Asklepios fund is used for the purchase of
interdisciplinary books that link social, behavioral and humanity
sciences with the natural and physical sciences, using a holistic
approach. A specially designed book plate identifies the books
acquired.
Sussman's own donation will support the Asklepios fund, but
faculty and staff may specify whatever library activities they wish to
support.
Susan Brynteson, director of libraries, said, "Marvin Sussman is
continuing his marvelous history of generosity to the University of
Delaware Library. He is a long-time supporter of developing library
collections of distinction and of making information available to
users."
