Olympic runner visits campus
Steve Plasencia, a world-class distance runner and two-time
Olympic athlete, recently visited the University as a guest of men's
cross country and track and field coach Jim Fischer.
Plasencia (center) is shown with Fischer (left) and assistant
coach Eric Albright. Standing are members of the Delaware cross
country team (from left) Barry Baloga, John Brannon, Cris Ray, Travis
Adams and Eric Go.
During his stay, Plasencia met members of the University's cross
country teams and gave pointers on running and training techniques.
Holder of the ninth-fastest time in the 10,000-meter race in the
U.S., the event he took part in at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games,
Plasencia, 37, trained on campus for the 10,000-meter Road Racing
Championship in Tennessee. During his visit, he broke the Delaware
outdoor track record in the 3,200-meter run by 30 seconds.
