Conference for individuals with disabilities
Planning for Independence," a statewide conference for
individuals with disabilities, their families and service providers,
will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22, at the Sheraton Inn in
Dover. Registration materials must be postmarked Saturday, Oct. 8.
Highlights of the conference include a toy fair of the latest in
accessible or modified toys and games for children and children-at-
heart; an exhibit hall featuring Delaware's largest assembly of
product vendors, information resources and service providers for
individuals with disabilities; a keynote presentation by Edward V.
Roberts, president of the World Institute on Disability and
internationally recognized leader in the Independent Living/Civil
Rights for People with Disabilities movement; and two days of
seminars.
Seminar topics will range from the problems of individuals with
disabilities who are new parents to accessing the information super
highway and solutions to housing problems facing people with
disabilities. Other seminar topics include person-centered planning,
how to use the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) to access
employment, a guide to knowing state services, supported living, how
to get services while being diplomatic, earning money and maintaining
assistance.
Registration fees include access to all scheduled presentations,
the exhibit hall and toy fair and any food served at breaks or lunch
during the day. Fees for consumers are $20 per person for one day and
$30 per person for two days. Fees for other attendees are $25 per
person for one day and $40 per person for two days. There is a $5
entry fee for the exhibit hall and toy fair only, for one day.
Scholarships are available for individuals with a disability and
their family member(s) or personal care assistants who are unable to
afford the discounted consumer registration fee.
Brailled materials, assistive listening devices, sign language
interpreters, large print materials, audiotaped materials, accessible
transportation, Spanish materials and special meals may be made
available upon advanced request.
The conference is sponsored by the Delaware Developmental
Disabilities Planning Council and the Delaware Assistive Technology
Initiative (DATI).
