Purchasing alert: Office buyers, beware!

There have been a number of cases where University departments
have been contacted or sent invoices by fraudulent vendors, according
to Tory Windley, director of purchasing.
One scam involves sending "directory renewal invoices" that
appear to be for the Yellow Pages classified section of the phone
directory but are not. These may come from Professional Employer,
Employment Advertiser or National Employment Advertiser, all using the
address: 256 South Robertson Blvd., Beverly Hills, CA, or from
Classified Advertising Services, 557 California Ave., Boulder City,
NV.
These invoices include copies of ads legitimately run in another
publication, Windley said. Fortunately, two of these invoices sent by
University departments to Purchasing were discovered and not paid. In
another area, several departments received false invoices for
maintenance from National PC Systems, 4938 Hampden Lane, Bethesda, MD.
United Office Supplies, 8031 Wadsworth Blvd. Arvada, CO, has made
sales calls to departments offering what appear to be great deals for
office supplies, but are, in reality, usually twice as expensive as
what the University normally pays.
It is a case of "buyer beware," Windley said. All sales calls can
be referred to Purchasing at 831-2161, and invoices can be sent to
Purchasing for verification and payment.
