New trustees appointed by governor to UD board

Delaware Gov. Thomas R. Carper has appointed two new members,
Charles M. Cawley and Lozelle Jenkins De Luz, to the University of
Delaware Board of Trustees.
Chairman and chief executive officer of MBNA America Bank N.A.,
Cawley is a graduate of Georgetown University with a degree in
political science. He is a member of the Georgetown Board of Regents,
and was the senior member of the team that established MBNA in 1982
with 100 people.
Based in Newark, MBNA America Bank N.A. is the world's second-
largest lender through bank credit cards and has $14.2 billion in
managed loans. The company is composed of more than 10,000 people
throughout the world-more than 6,500 of them in Delaware-and serves
more than 12 million customers.
Cawley said he is honored to join the University's Board of
Trustees for several reasons.
"First, I've been impressed with the quality of the product-more
than 1,000 University of Delaware graduates and students work at MBNA,
and each of them displays an enthusiasm and spirit that is an
important part of the success we've had," Cawley said. "Second, David
Roselle is a very effective CEO. Third, this is an important board
that touches on just about every aspect of life in Delaware."
A native of Beverly, Mass., Cawley first went to work as a branch
manager for a national finance company. He subsequently worked for
First National Bank of Boston and Maryland National Bank before moving
to Delaware to start MBNA. The company, which went public in 1991, now
trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker signal KRB.
Cawley is married and has two children. He is a member of the
Board of Regents of the American Architectural Foundation and a member
of the Executive Committee of MasterCard International's board of
directors.
De Luz, who received her doctorate in urban affairs and public
policy from the University of Delaware in 1982, is known for her
outstanding career in education, publishing, business and community
service.
Currently president of De Luz Management Consultants, she and her
husband, Anthony, are owners of three McDonald's restaurants and they
recently celebrated 20 years as owners of McDonald's franchises.
     A graduate of Winston-Salem State University, with a master's
degree from George Washington University, De Luz was a teacher,
elementary school principal and a college instructor. As vice
president and editor-in-chief of the J.B. Lippincott Publishing Co. in
Philadelphia, De Luz was cited for eliminating racial and sexual
stereotypes in educational textbooks.
She has been involved as a volunteer and officer or board member
for a number of public service activities and organizations, including
the Children's Bureau, Wilmington Chapter Links Inc., Medical Center
of Delaware, Wilmington Institute Free Library, Delaware State Chamber
of Commerce, Small Business Administration, Wesley College Board of
Directors and We Care in Delaware Inc.
Currently, she is president of the Philadelphia Black McDonald's
Owner/Operators Association and serves on the Delaware Trust board of
directors.
According to De Luz, "I see my role as an advocate for improving
the quality of education for students attending the University. In
particular, I would like to share in the effort to improve cultural
relations at the University, especially for minority students. This
effort is essential as we meet the societal demands of an increasingly
diverse student population."
