MEMORANDUM

RE: Campus nominations
President Roselle recently initiated a nationwide search for a
vice president for student life. National advertising in The Chronicle
of Higher Education and Black Issues in Higher Education began this
month. Letters requesting nominations also were sent to the presidents
of institutions in the National Association of State Universities and
Land-Grant Colleges and the American Association of Universities, as
well as to numerous professional contacts across the country.
A 13-member committee representing the campus community has been
appointed. Betty Paulanka, dean of the College of Nursing, is chairing
the committee. The committee has met once to review its tasks and
define a time line. As its first official activity, the committee
invites members of the University community to submit nominations for
this important position. Nominations or letters of interest for the
position should be sent to:

A substantive review of applications will begin around the middle
of November. It is expected that the successful applicant will assume
the post of vice president for student life by early July.
The vice president for student life reports to the provost and is
a member of the president's senior staff. As the chief student life
officer, the vice president provides leadership to and direction for
the offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Career Services, Counseling
and Student Development, Dean of Students, Residence Life, Student
Health Service, Student Centers and Student Services for Athletes.
The vice president is responsible for the maintenance and
enhancement of the University's positive multicultural and multiracial
climate, expanding opportunities for the integration of students'
personal, academic and cultural development and perpetuating the
institution's enthusiasm and commitment to improving the quality of
student life and maintaining academic excellence.
Candidates for the position of vice president for student life
must have demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and
management skills; proven leadership skills in a diversified
university setting; and an impressive academic background. A graduate
or professional degree is required; a doctorate is preferred.
Other members of the search committee are Ronald Lieberman,
president of the Delaware Undergraduate Student Congress; Nakishia
Williams, president of the Black Student Union; Kathryn Emery,
president of Panhellenic; Michael Piacente, president of the
Interfraternity Council; Maxine Colm, vice president for employee
relations; Araya Debessay, professor of accounting; Pierre Hayward,
vice president and University secretary; Barbara Kelly, professor of
physical education; Barbara Kreppel, assistant vice president; Kenneth
Lomax, associate professor of agricultural engineering; David Pong,
chairperson, Department of History; and Michael Vaughan, assistant
dean of the College of Engineering and director of the RISE program.
John Cavanaugh, ACE fellow, will serve as staff assistant to the
committee.
