Saturday Morning Math announces fall schedule

The new fall session of the University's Saturday Morning Math
program, designed to enrich mathematical experiences in non-
traditional formats for students in grades 1-8, will include a new
class, "Computer-Intensive Algebra" for students in grades 7-10.
All Saturday Morning Math offerings include problem-solving
strategies and computer programming to encourage an interest in
mathematics. The new class offers students a chance to learn algebra
in a way that is totally different from what they might expect.
Students will use computers and hand-held graphing calculators to
explore concepts in algebra and have fun at the same time.
The approach is consistent with that recommended by the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Students of all ability levels are
welcome to enroll.
"Computer-Intensive Algebra" will be offered in three sessions,
and different themes will be explored in each. The first will run for
six consecutive Saturdays, Oct. 22 to Dec. 2. The other two sessions
begin on Jan. 28 and April 1. Students can enroll in classes scheduled
from 8-10 a.m. or from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Tuition is $40 and enrollment will be limited on a first-paid,
first-served basis. Enrollment for the first session will open on Oct.
3; the second on Jan. 3 and the third on March 6.
Faculty for "Computer-Intensive Algebra" include Valerie Maxell,
an eighth-grade teacher at the Redding Middle School, who has used the
curriculum in New Jersey, and Karen Lupien, a mathematics teacher at
Glasgow High School.
Regular six-week Saturday Morning Math classes will be held in
three sessions, each with different themes, that begin on Oct. 8, Jan.
7 and Feb. 25. Three sections at varying times also are available for
each of these sessions from 8:30-10 a.m., from 10:15-11:45 a.m. and
from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Registration for the regular sessions opens Sept. 19, Dec. 12 and
Feb. 13, respectively. Tuition for these classes is also $40,
enrollment is limited and students will be registered on a first-paid,
first-served basis. Limited financial scholarship funds are available.
Saturday Morning Math faculty include Martie McCormick, a teacher
with experience in teaching kindergarten through ninth grade, and
Yvonne Aluise, a teacher of third, fourth and fifth grade chapter one
mathematics.
