Diversity
Team players; University couple addresses substantive issues

Getting people to think more about the important, interpersonal
issues that affect each of us and that have an impact on the way we
interact with each other is the goal of Garret and Vicki Moore, Public
Safety, a husband-and-wife team who have been conducting diversity and
multicultural-oriented training sessions for several years.
Lt. Garret Moore, a police manager and supervisor of the evening
shift, and Master Police Officer Vicki Moore have presented training
sessions at Delaware for their colleagues in Public Safety as well as
in units across the campus, involving students, faculty, staff and
administrators.
Garret Moore also has held sessions for the Delaware State
Police. Next month, the couple will conduct human relations training
for members of Lehigh University's police department.
Multicultural sensitivity training is especially important for
police personnel, Garret Moore said.
"Law enforcement personnel are always in a situation where they
have to judge others," he said. "It's important for police officers to
have an open mind and to realize they can't put their opinions or
stereotypes into action and affect their judgment."
"People from different cultures, ethnic origins and backgrounds,"
Vicki Moore said, "may react differently to authority figures."
The focus and material of the couple's programs depend upon the
educational and professional levels of those in the audience and the
specific objectives of the training session or workshop, Vicki Moore
explained.
"Even if people don't like the training," she said. "I want them
to think about it and talk about the issues we are trying to address.
"If that happens, I feel it has been a success."
