Convocation ceremony to welcome class of 1999
The New Student Convocation ceremony, formally welcoming the
Class of 1999 and transfer students of the classes of 1996-98, will be
held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 28, on the North Mall.
The processional will begin at 10:45 a.m., with the University
marshal leading the platform committee to the stage at 11 a.m.
Carol Hoffecker, Richards Professor of History, will address the
new students.
As a part of the ceremony the Francis Alison Award, given to a
faculty member for outstanding contributions to the University and to
his or her profession, will be presented to Frank R. Scarpitti,
professor of sociology.
In addition, the University of Delaware Medal of Distinction will
be awarded to Andrew J. Turner Jr., who has served as director of the
state Division of Human Relations since 1983 when he was appointed by
then Governor Pierre du Pont. He recently joined the UD as special
assistant to the vice president for employee relations.
Continuing a University tradition, representatives of the Class
of 1949 will present freshman class delegate Stephanie A. Vega with a
Class of 1999 flag.
Damien C. O'Doherty, president of the Delaware Undergraduate
Student Congress, also will welcome new students, and student Angelyn
Robinson, accompanied by Delaware Brass, will lead the audience in the
University of Delaware alma mater.
The Convocation will follow the departmental academic
orientation. Chairpersons and faculty conducting the orientations have
been asked to escort students to the North Mall.
Faculty not involved in the academic orientations should arrive
on the Mall from 10:30-10:45 a.m., and ushers will assist them in
finding their correct groups for the processional. Deans will wear
academic robes, and chairpersons and faculty also are welcome to do
so.
A lunch will follow on the North Mall.
In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved to Mitchell Hall
for all undeclared majors.
Other colleges are preparing appropriate rain site plans.
For further information about the ceremony, call Linda Hardin or
Joan Forestell at 831-6331. All members of the University are welcome
to participate in the convocation, but anyone planning to attend
should contact Forestell by Aug. 21.
