     TRANSCOOP PROGRAM GRANTS (8/17-1)- The German-American Academic
Council Foundation, together with the Alexander von Humboldt
Foundation, is awarding Transcoop Program grants for trans-atlantic
research cooperation in the humanities and social sciences. Funds are
available to support cooperative projects among and between German,
U.S. and/or Canadian scholars and/or groups of scholars from
universities. A Ph.D. degree is required. Projects in the humanities
and social sciences, including law and economics, selected for funding
can receive up to $60,000 each over a three-year period. The amount
applied for from Transcoop must be matched by funds from U.S. and/or
Canadian sources, which must be identified in the application. Project
funds may be used to finance short-term research visits, special
conferences and workshops, material and equipment, printing costs and

     USIA RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN CONTEMPORARY ISSUES (8/17-2)-This
program provides funding to scholars of the New Independent States
(NIS) who have demonstrated an interest in, or are engaged in,
democratic and free-market reform efforts. The fellowships provide
funding to support research for periods of three to six months at
American universities, research organizations, policy institutes,
professional associations, government offices and private foundations.
The proposed research must be political, economic, social, legal,
educational, journalistic, electoral, governmental or defense reform
efforts in the NIS. Research must be issue- and policy-oriented and
must focus on the countries of the NIS or the United States. Normally,
applicants must hold a Candidate of Sciences degree and have a minimum

     JENNINGS RANDOLPH PROGRAM FOR INTERNATIONAL PEACE 1996-97
FELLOWSHIPS (8/17-3)-The U.S Institute of Peace invites applications
for senior fellowships for up to one year as part of its Jennings
Randolph Program for International Peace. Fellowships are awarded
annually to scholars and practitioners to conduct research at the
institute on projects concerning international peace and conflict
resolution. Application is open to citizens of all nations. Deadline

     AFRICAN DISSERTATION INTERNSHIP AWARDS (ADIA) (8/17-4)-Doctoral
students from sub-Saharan Africa are invited to apply to the
Rockefeller Foundation for dissertation research support. The program
enables Ph.D. students enrolled in U.S. and Canadian universities to
return to Africa for extensive research involving field observation or
the use of primary sources available only in Africa. Priority is given
to research topics in the fields of agriculture, environment, health,
life sciences, population and schooling. Applicants are responsible
for arranging affiliation with an African institution able to provide
needed research support, such as laboratory facilities, access to
study sites and technical advice. The candidate's faculty advisers,
the host institution in Africa and the agency with primary
responsibility for financing the student's graduate work must all send
letters of endorsement. The maximum award is $20,000. Deadlines for
applications are Oct. 1 and March 1. Upon completion of their doctoral
degrees, alumni of the ADIA program who return to Africa are invited
to apply for Rockefeller Foundation African Science-Based Development

     ACLS/CHIANG CHING-KUO FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS FOR DISSERTATION
RESEARCH ABROAD (8/17-5)- These fellowships are offered to enable
doctoral degree candidates to undertake a period of dissertation
research outside the United States in any country except the People's
Republic of China. The choice of research location must be carefully
and fully justified. The dissertation must be related to China,
although it may be in any discipline of the humanities and social
sciences, or it may be interdisciplinary. Applicants must be regular
Ph.D. candidates, who will complete all requirements for the doctorate
except the dissertation by June 30, 1996. There are no citizenship
restrictions, but foreign nationals must be enrolled as full-time
Ph.D. candidates in U.S. institutions. The basic stipends are intended
to cover travel, living and research expenses and will generally not
exceed $15,000 for full-year programs. Deadline is Nov. 1. For more

     GRANTS FOR EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES (8/17-6)-Fellowships will be
offered for research and training in the social sciences and
humanities relating to Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary,
Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the successor states of Yugoslavia.
Proposals dealing with Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and the former
Yugoslavia are particularly encouraged. In awarding these grants,
consideration is given to the scholarly merit of the proposal, its
importance to the development of East European studies and the
scholarly potential, accomplishments and financial need of the
applicant. All proposals should be for scholarly work, the product of
which is to be disseminated in English. Applicants must be citizens or
permanent residents of the United States. Except as otherwise noted,
these programs are intended to support research undertaken outside
East Europe, although short visits to the area may be proposed as part
of a coherent program primarily undertaken elsewhere.
     FELLOWSHIPS FOR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH IN EAST EUROPEAN
        STUDIES-Scholars may apply for fellowships to undertake a
        period of at least six consecutive months of fulltime
        research. Applicants are required to hold the Ph.D. degree as
        of the application deadline date, or its equivalent as
        demonstrated by professional experience and publications. The
        fellowships are intended primarily as salary replacement to
        provide free time for research. The funds may be used to
        supplement sabbatical salaries or awards from other sources,
        provided they would intensify or extend the contemplated
        research. Deadline is Nov. 1.
     DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS IN EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES-Doctoral
        candidates may apply for an academic year of support for
        dissertation research or writing to be undertaken outside of
        East Europe. The maximum stipend will be $15,000 plus
        expenses. Deadline is Nov. 1.

     DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS FOR LATIN AMERICA (8/17-7)-These
fellowships are offered for doctoral dissertation research in the
social sciences and humanities. Proposals on any topic are eligible
for support, including projects comparing Latin American or Caribbean
countries to others located outside this region. Recipients of
fellowships are expected to devote a minimum of nine and a maximum of
18 months to field research in the country or countries relevant to
their proposals. While abroad, fellows are required to affiliate with
a university, research institute or another appropriate institution in
the country where they will be conducting research. Support for
dissertation write-up is available to fellows for up to six months
after return from the field. Full-time students, regardless of
citizenship, who are enrolled in doctoral programs in the United
States are eligible. Students should have completed all Ph.D.
requirements, except the dissertation, before going into the field.

     DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS IN WESTERN EUROPE (8/17-8)-These
fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation research in Western
Europe in the social sciences and humanities. Particularly encouraged
are applications from disciplines in which relatively less attention
has been devoted to Western Europe, such as economics, social
psychology and sociology. Applications will also be accepted for
research involving both Europe and the United States if required by
the comparative nature of the project. Applicants are expected to
devote a minimum of six and a maximum of 12 months to field research
in the country or countries relevant to their proposals. They should
be prepared to begin research within the year after the date on which
the awards are made. There are no citizenship requirements for full-
time students enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States.
American citizens or permanent residents of the United States who are
similarly enrolled at accredited foreign universities also are

     SCHOLARLY EXCHANGE WITH CHINA (8/17-9)-The Committee on Scholarly
Communication with China (CSCC) announces scholarly exchange programs
with the People's Republic of China for the 1996-97 academic year. The
graduate and research programs offer opportunities to graduate
students and scholars in the social sciences and humanities to conduct
long-term research in China. Deadline is Oct. 13. Chinese fellowships
for scholarly development invite nominations for Chinese scholars in
the social sciences or humanities with a graduate degree from a
Chinese institution to conduct research at an American university for
one semester. Nominations must be made by American scholars. Deadline
