Construction on campus peaks during the summer
Summer is vacation and renewal time for many members of the
University community, and it also is one of the busiest times of year
for the facilities staff, according to Tom Vacha, assistant vice
president for facilities management.
New construction is going forward, renovations are under way in
classrooms, offices, residence halls and other locations, systems are
being upgraded and walks are being replaced.
For campus sidewalk superintendents, here's a guide to ongoing
projects in Newark and Lewes.
* The new student center, proceeding ahead of schedule because
of the mild winter, is scheduled to open in late spring.
* The Clayton Hall entrance has been redone with a sloped
entrance, and 11 handicapped parking slots were created to
the right of the building. A new serpentine walk with steps
leads to the general parking lot.
* The $3.4 million renovation of Recitation Hall and Annex, to
include new roofs, air conditioning and painting, is well
under way.
* The new addition to Colburn Laboratory will be completed
later this month, and the renovation of the existing section
is about to begin.
* The exteriors of four houses on West Delaware Avenue (12,
28, 30 and 34) are being renovated with new roofs,
handicapped access and other improvements. At 28 and 34 West
Delaware Ave., the interiors also are being redone.
* McDowell Hall has received a new roof.
* The diving platform at the pool in Carpenter Sports
Building's Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium has been redone.
Plans are being made for replacements of the tiles next
year.
* Walkways have been replaced on the Mall between Delaware
Avenue and Main Street. Work continues on walkways near Wolf
Hall.
* Steam and condensate replacements are completed on the North
Mall.
* Hollingsworth, Russell, General Services, Dickinson and
Laird parking lots, as well as the Visitors Parking Lot on
Academy Street and Robinson/Warner drive and Pearson Hall
drive, are being improved.
* Old College and Pearson Hall, several buildings on the Mall
and others are being repainted.
* Bike racks are being installed at Wolf Hall, on the North
Mall and at various residence halls.
* Bulletin boards are being replaced.
* The overhead walk between Kirkbride and Ewing halls, the
approach to the Smith overpass and the walk between Purnell
and Smith halls are being redone.
* The capacity of the storm sewer serving the East Campus and
the area west of Academy Street was expanded with
installation of a new 48-inch drain line that extended from
the area near Alison Hall to Courtney Street.
* Two large Kirkbride classrooms are being completely
renovated with new seating and audio-visual equipment.
* In Brown Laboratory, chemistry labs will be upgraded.
* In Sharp Laboratory, the public spaces are being renovated
with new lighting, tiles and painting.
* In Lewes, the harbor will be dredged in early August and the
sea water system in labs will be improved.
