Internet, World Wide Web used for campus business

Incoming University students were immediately introduced to the
Internet and the World Wide Web as a means for conducting routine
campus business as part of New Student Orientation conducted by the
Office of Admissions this summer on the Newark campus.
New students used secure, Web browsers to confirm addresses,
search course requirements and print fall schedules.
Once on campus, students access grade reports and financial aid
information, print transcripts and student bills and change personal
address information, using Web browsers at home, in residence halls,
in computer labs and from touch-screen kiosks.
The Web browsers provide powerful, new front-end functionality to
old administrative mainframe applications.
Proxy servers package the output from the exiting COBOL programs
using the Web's Hyper-Text Transport Protocol.
Delaware has adopted Netscape's Secure Socket Layer security
protocol to encrypt and protect this private information.
Many administrative systems are being reworked at Delaware to
provide secure Web access for the fall semester. These include a
campus-wide electronic forms system, employee access to personnel
records and the merging of student information with ID photograph
images.

applications may be found at http:/www.mis.udel.edu/admin.html.
