Indian officials arrive for management training
Eighteen government officials, professionals, educators and
citizen activists from India arrived at the University July 29, for a
four-week session that is part of a certificate program in sustainable
development management. Sustainable resource management means the use
of natural resources at rates that assure continuous availability of
needed resources to future generations.
The Delaware visit is part of a 14-week program jointly sponsored
by the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy (CEEP) in the
College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy and the Tata Energy
Research Institute (TERI), with funding provided by the United Nations
University, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. National Renewable
Energy Laboratory and the Asia Foundation.
The program is designed to train Indian government officials at
the national, state and local levels, and others who can influence the
course of development in India on opportunities for sustainable
resource management.
Objectives of the program are to provide participants an in-depth
understanding and the analytical skills needed for sustainable
resource management; to develop and disseminate ideas of sustainable
development that are sensitive to the needs of India; and to create
leadership in government and community-based organizations to promote
environmentally sensitive development goals.
A set of core courses that focus on international issues of
energy, environment and development are being offered.
Emphasis is placed on policy aspects of sustainable development,
efficiency of resource utilization and conservation.
TERI is a non-profit research institute committed to developing
solutions to the energy and environmental problems of humankind.
CEEP is the principal research unit for graduate study in the
College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, and the center supports
graduate concentrations in energy and environmental policy analysis
and technology, environment and society.
