Marion C. Hyson is chairperson of individual and family studies

     Marion C. Hyson, professor and former acting chairperson of the
Department of Individual and Family Studies, was named chairperson of
the department, effective June 1.
     Hyson joined the University as an assistant professor in l983.
She became an associate professor in 1988, was promoted to full
professor in 1995, and served as acting chairperson of the department
from 1991-1992 and from 1994-95.
     A graduate of Boston University, she received her master's degree
from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her doctorate
from Bryn Mawr College.
     Hyson's research and teaching interests include developmentally
appropriate classroom practices in early childhood programs, adult
performance expectations and children's coping behavior, relationships
among emotions, behavior and learning in young children and
socialization of emotions in family and early education settings.
     Hyson is editor of Early Childhood Research Quarterly and a
former associate editor of Early Education and Development. Her books
include The Emotional Development of Young Children:  Building an
Emotion-Centered Curriculum, Academic Instruction in Early Childhood:
Challenge or Pressure?, New Directions for Child Development and
Teachers' Practical Guide to Educating Young Children: A Growing
Program.
     Additionally, she has authored several chapters in books and
numerous articles and has presented papers nationally and
internationally. Hyson is the recipient of many grants, including a
$149,700 grant from the Spencer Foundation for "Academic Environments
in Early Childhood: Challenge or Pressure?"
     She is a member of the Board of Examiners of the National
Association for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and co-chair of
the advisory board of Delaware First... Again, a state-wide professional
development plan in early care and education.
