Carpenter Center selected for 76ers' training camp
The NBA's Philadelphia 76ers will conduct preseason training Oct. 6-12
at the University of Delaware, team general manager John Lucas announced
July 6 at a press conference in the Bob Carpenter Center.
"We are excited about our move to Delaware for training camp," Lucas
said. "We feel this will give the basketball fans in another area a chance
to experience what training camp is all about, while giving us a chance to
reach out to a largely untapped business community for the first time."
Since the fall of 1978, the Sixers training camp was held at Franklin
and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Delaware was chosen this year over
Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., Monmouth University in West Long
Branch, N.J., and Franklin and Marshall.
The arrangement, Lucas said, is for one season but may be extended for
additional seasons if both parties agree.
The Sixers will conduct double sessions, at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.,
beginning Saturday, Oct. 7. Many of the training sessions will be open to
the public, with special sessions for season ticket holders and key
sponsors.
Mike Brey, Delaware men's head basketball coach, who was actively
involved in the discussions with Sixers management, said he and members of
the Blue Hen team are excited about the upcoming presence of the 76ers on
the Delaware campus.
According to UD Athletic Director Edgar Johnson, "The decision by the
Philadelphia 76ers to use the University of Delaware's state-of-the-art
training facilities and modern arena is a development that, we believe,
will be a positive experience for all involved.
"The University's successful athletic program and training complex
will be spotlighted during the NBA team's training sessions, and the 76ers
will be able to expand their fan base and attract the attention of
residents and business representatives from several surrounding states," he
said.
"At the same time, our students will have contact with some of
professional basketball's best athletes. We are pleased with the 76ers
decision, and we intend to welcome the team and its management as full
members of our campus community."
