Scholar-athlete Travis Adams wins NCAA post-graduate award

     Travis Adams, a cross country/track and field standout at the
University of Delaware, has been awarded a prestigious National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) scholarship, one of 97 scholartships awarded
nationwide.
     The $5,000 scholarships for post-graduate study are awarded to student
athletes in sports other than football and basketball, who maintain at
least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and who perform with distinction
in varsity competition.
     Adams plans to continue his studies in biomechanics. He is the seventh
UD student-athlete to receive the NCAA award, and the first since Alison
Farrance in 1986.
     Travis also has been named to the GTE-College Sports Information
Directors of America  (CoSIDA) At-Large Academic All-American second team
for the second straight year and to the District II GTE/CoSIDA Men's
Academic At-Large team for the third straight year.
     The All-American team consists of athletes from sports other than
football, basketball and baseball from all Division I schools. Student-
athletes must have 3.2 grade point average or better and be a key team
player.
     Adams, a chemistry and physics double major with a 3.86 grade point
average, was a team co-captain and four-year standout in cross country and
indoor and outdoor track and field.
     He led the Blue Hens to three North Atlantic Conference (NAC) track
team titles during his career. He won the NAC outdoor 10,000 meter-event in
May, placed seventh at the 1994 NAC cross country championships in November
and was fifth in the 1995 NAC indoor championships in the 5,000 meters in
February. He owns nine career top-eight finishes in NAC track championship
action, and he earned All-East notice by finishing 10th in the 10,000
meters at the 1994 Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of
America (IC4A) outdoor championships.
     Adams is a two-time Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Medal of
Merit award winner.
