3 teams in Relay for Life
It was a 24-hour campathon when 31 teams assembled at Hodgson Vo-Tech
High School for the Delaware Division of the American Cancer Society's
Relay for Life from 6 p.m. on June 23 until 6 p.m., June 24.
Three teams affiliated with the University-the University of Delaware
Association of Retired Faculty (UDARF) Walkers, the University of Delaware
Cross Country Team Little Buddahs, and the Meakin Family and Friends
(coordinated by John Meakin, professor of mechanical engineering)-took
part.
The event raised close to $50,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Each team had eight to 15 members who took turns walking or running
around the Hodgson track for 24 hours, while keeping track of the laps.
The UDARF Walkers, with an average age of 68, was captained by John
Wriston, professor emeritus of chemistry and biochemistry.
The Cross Country Team's Little Buddahs, led by student Bryan Wilson,
captured the running trophy by running 875 laps, or 218 miles.
The Meakin Family and Friends team, represented by chef Sadie Meakin,
captured honors for Relay Roulade in the Saturday noon chicken cook-off for
the second year.
Off-the-track activities included volleyball, a tent decorating
contest, a tug-of-war, a 24-hour disc jockey and other contests and
entertainment.
According to Meakin, this was the second year of the Delaware relay,
and the participation doubled. He encouraged others to take part in the
relay next spring. "It is an enjoyable, lighthearted event with a serious
purpose and a significant fundraiser for a good cause," he said.
