Fireworks to sparkle at 1995 Summer Arts Festival

The University by the Sea Summer Arts Festival opens Saturday, July 8,
with the annual Cape Concert, presented by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra,
under the direction of Stephen Gunzenhauser. Sponsored by PNC Bank, the
concert begins at 8 p.m. and includes works by Sousa, Handel, Gershwin,
Fillmore, Gould and others.
Following tradition, the concert concludes with Tschaikovsky's 1812
Overture, with a grand finale that includes live cannon fire by the
Lancaster Cannon Co.
The evening ends with a fireworks spectacular, sponsored by WBOC-TV16.
Rain date for the concert is Sunday, July 9.
The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with entertainment by the Sin City
Band on the festival grounds. Audience members are invited to picnic at
that time.
All events in the festival will be held under the stars on the
University's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes. Seating is on the grass and
audience members are encouraged to bring lawnchairs or blankets. Picnic
dinners are suggested, and there will be a variety of foods for purchase.
The festival continues with a special event for children when the
American Family Theatre presents Pippi Longstocking at 7:30 p.m., Thursday,
July 13. The magic of live musical theatre is part of the Theatre's
Broadway for Kids Series and is sure to be a hit with youngsters of all
ages.
Jazz fans will revel in the next festival offering, "Hot Nights/Cool
Jazz," scheduled at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 14. The wailing horns and spicy
beat of the popular, Baltimore-based sextet Moon August and the Brazilian-
boogie-style jazz of Minas will light up the night. This concert of the
best in contemporary jazz is sponsored by Delmarva Power.
The festival concludes Saturday, July 15, when "Rock 'n' Roll &
Remember" will feature The Coasters, The Drifters and Martha Reeves & The
Vandellas in concert at 7:30 p.m. The sounds of old favorites like the
Drifters' There Goes My Baby, This Magic Moment and Under the Boardwalk;
the Coasters' Charlie Brown, Yakety Yak and Love Potion No. 9; and the
Martha Reeves' hits Heat Wave, No Where to Run and Dancing in the Streets
will fill the air. This concert is sponsored by Price Acura.

comedy, will be master of ceremonies at the shows on July 14 and 15. Lennon
