UD United Way committee announced

     Because of you...a partnership works" is the theme for the 1995 United
Way campaign.
     The kick-off for this year's campus United Way drive is scheduled for
Oct. 9, and the campaign will continue through Oct. 31, according to co-
chairpersons Joyce Dennis Henderson and Karen Garrett, Employee Services.
     "New ideas have been generated from members of the United Way planning
committee this year," Dennis Henderson said. "Video will be used to link
the Newark, Lewes and Georgetown campuses, in celebrating the University's
kick-off festivities."
     According to Garrett, "The United Way campaign represents how the
University community pulls together to form a joint partnership with the
community, whether it be through financial contributions or volunteer work
at the member agencies."
     The Pacesetters campaign on campus, chaired by University Provost Mel
Schiavelli, is slated to run from Sept. 11-25.
     "The Pacesetters campaign is an appropriate start to the University's
annual United Way fund drive," Schiavelli said. "Senior administrators,
faculty and staff will be asked to help set an example for the rest of the
employees before the campus campaign's official beginning in October. If we
can show, through our pledges of support, a significant commitment to the
United Way, others will be more inclined to join us and give to the extent
they are able.
     "The results of the work done by United Way agencies touch each of us
is some way, whether directly or indirectly. Volunteer and financial
support are critical to the continued operation of many of these worthwhile
agencies. This annual campaign is an opportunity to help others and, at the
same time, reflect on the good fortune that many of us have enjoyed."
     The University's 1995 United Way Planning Committee includes Robert
DiIorio, media services; Pierre Hayward, vice president and University
secretary; Mary Hempel, public relations; Charlene Jaeger, student life;
Sylvester Johnson, athletics; Cathy Skelley, housing and conference
services; Richard Tarpley, marine studies; Cindy Timko, agricultural
sciences; Kathleen Troutman, media services; Douglas Tuttle, public safety;
Richard Zipser, foreign languages and literatures; Larry Logan, Local 3472;
and Rex Bowlin, Local 439.
     This year, Maxine Colm, vice president for employee relations, is
chairperson of the statewide Educational Division of United Way, which
includes educational insitutions of various levels.
     According to Colm, "Area colleges, universities and school districts
can make a major difference in the success of this year's annual campaign,
by pooling their ideas and resources to enhance employee contributions."
     She said she is spearheading an initiative that will encourage area
superintendents to become "pacesetters" in their respective school
districts and to involve senior staff in the initiative. A similar program
will be geared to area colleges and universities.
     "The University continues to be a 'pacesetter' for the educational
division," Colm said, "and I anticipate that 1995 will again be a banner
year for United Way giving by our employees."
