College recognized for leadership

The College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy was recognized as a
leadership school by the Urban Affairs Association (UAA) in May at the
organization's 25th annual meeting in Portland, Ore. The UD college was
honored for its contributions to the field of urban affairs through its
long, consistent and generous support for the association.
Mary Helen Callahan, assistant to the dean for advancement and special
programs, also was cited and given a plaque for her "outstanding
professional service" as executive director of UAA.
According to Dean Dan Rich, it was gratifying to receive recognition
of the college's and University's role in the continued development of the
UAA, and it was particularly pleasing that Callahan was honored for her
contributions to making UAA "the premier organization in the field."
Since 1975 the college has been the administrative headquarters of
UAA, which promotes the development of university urban programs and helps
disseminate urban research that informs public policy.
The association, which is multidisciplinary in nature, has members in
more than 200 colleges and universities, in the private and non-profit
sectors and at all levels of government. It co-sponsors, with the
University of Louisville the Journal of Urban Affairs; publishes a
newsletter and directory of urban affairs programs; hosts regional
colloquia; and acts as a clearing house on urban affairs programs and
information.
As the organization has grown, it has become international in scope,
with members from Canada and Europe and more recently from the Pacific Rim
and Africa. In 1994, the first international conference was held in
England, and plans are under way for another.
