Coasters, Drifters and Martha Reeves headline fest

     Lewes is the place to be in July as the University once again offers
its University by the Sea Summer Arts Festival.
     This year's festival offers something for everyone, with selections
that include "Rock 'n' Roll & Remember" with the Coasters, the Drifters and
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas; the American Family Theatre's production
of Pippi Longstocking; the annual Cape Concert with the Delaware Symphony,
followed by a fireworks spectacular; and "Hot Nights/Cool Jazz," with well-
known groups Moon August and Minas.
     All events will be held under the stars on the University's Hugh R.
Sharp Campus in Lewes. Seating is on the grass and audience members are
encouraged to bring lawnchairs or blankets. Picnic dinners are suggested,
and there will be a variety of foods for purchase.
     The festival opens Saturday, July 8, with the annual Cape Concert,
presented by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of
Stephen Gunzenhauser. Sponsored by PNC Bank, the concert begins at 8 p.m.
and includes works by Sousa, Handel, Gershwin, Fillmore, Gould and others.
     Following tradition, the concert concludes with Tschaikovsky's 1812
Overture, with a grand finale that includes live cannon fire by the
Lancaster Cannon Co. The evening concludes with a fireworks spectacular,
sponsored by WBOC-TV16. Rain date for the concert is Sunday, July 9.
     The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with entertainment by the Sin City
Band on the festival grounds. Audience members are invited to picnic at
that time.
     Advance tickets for the Cape Concert are $11 for adults and $5 for
youth ages 7-17. At the door, tickets are $13 for adults and $7 for youth.
The concert is free to children under the age of 7.
     The festival continues with a special event for children when the
American Family Theatre presents Pippi Longstocking at 7:30 p.m., Thursday,
July 13. The magic of live musical theatre is part of the Theatre's
Broadway for Kids Series and is sure to be a hit with youngsters of all
ages.
     There is no admission for children and youth up to the ages of 17, and
adults tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
     Jazz fans will revel in the next festival offering, "Hot Nights/Cool
Jazz," scheduled at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 14. The wailing horns and spicy
beat of the popular, Baltimore-based sextet Moon August and the Brazilian-
boogie-style jazz of Minas will light up the night. This concert is
sponsored by Delmarva Power. Advance tickets for the jazz concert are $8
for adults and $5 for youth ages 7-17. At the door, admission is $10 for
adults and $7 for youth. There is no admission for children under the age
of 7.
     The festival concludes Saturday, July 15, when "Rock 'n' Roll &
Remember" will feature The Coasters, The Drifters and Martha Reeves & The
Vandellas in concert at 7:30 p.m.
     The sounds of old favorites like the Drifters' There Goes My Baby,
This Magic Moment and Under the Boardwalk; the Coasters' Charlie Brown,
Yakety Yak and Love Potion No. 9; and the Martha Reeves' hits Heat Wave, No
Where to Run and Dancing in the Streets will fill the air. This concert is
sponsored by Price Acura. Advance tickets are $13 for adults and $5 for
children ages 7 to 17. At the door, tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for
youth. There is no admission charge for children under the age of 7.
     As an added attraction, comedian/ impressionist Paul Lennon, known for
his clean approach to comedy, will be master of ceremonies at the shows on
July 14 and 15. Lennon has appeared with some of the biggest names in the
business, sharing the stage with such stars as Barbara Mandrell, Bill
Cosby, Diana Ross and Kenny Rogers.

     Tickets also are on sale at UD offices located at 4 The Green in
Dover, at the Higher Education Building on Route 404 in Georgetown, at the
Lewes Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center, 120 Kings Highway and at box

     If there is possibility of inclement weather on the day of any event,

With the exception of the Cape Concert, which has a rain date of July 9,
most events will be held rain or shine.
     Ticket refunds will be made only if an event is canceled.
