Special Olympics opens center

     Delaware Special Olympics dedicated its new Program and Training
Center May 19 on the University campus, adjacent to the Delaware Field
House.
     Celebrating the new facility are (from left) Gov. Thomas R.
Carper; University President David P. Roselle; Thomas Grimm, a member
of the Special Olympics board; U.S. Rep. Michael N. Castle; Special
Olympian Robert Thomas of Dover; Harold Connolly, director of U.S.
chapters, Special Olympics International; Paul E. DiSabatino,
chairperson of the building campaign; and Laurence Raniere, president
of Delaware Special Olympics.
     Funded by a building campaign that raised more than $850,000, the
4,600-square-foot building represents a partnership of more than 20
years between Delaware Special Olympics and the University.
     Special Olympics is a year-round program of sports training and
competition for children and adults with mental retardation. Serving
more than 1,300 athletes participating in 15 Olympic-type sports, the
Delaware program is supported by more than 3,000 volunteers.
