Music trio all UD grads

Catherine (Katie) Karkosak, received her diploma May 27 from the
University, becoming the third generation of piano players in her
family to graduate with a degree in music.
Her grandmother, Pauline Piunti Citro, received a music degree
from UD in 1939, one of the first graduates of the music program. Her
mother, Carol Citro Karkosak, graduated from UD with a music degree in
1967 and received honors for being the music major with the highest
academic average.
Grandmother Pauline is a retired music teacher who still sings in
the Diocese Choir and writes musicals that daughter Katie's mother
produces in her job as music teacher at Warner. Two of Katie's aunts
are also UD music department alumnae. They are Pauline Citro
DeAscanis, Delaware '64, now head of the music department at Saint
Marks High School, and Jill Citro Hannigan, Delaware '79, head of the
University of Delaware Community Music School.
"We did dishes to classical music and sang Christmas carols all
summer planning Christmas concerts. Playing the piano was like
brushing your teeth. We thought everyone grew up that way," DeAscanis
said.
