PBL conference scheduled in June
The fourth annual UD "Problem-Based Learning Conference:
Techniques for Planning and Implementing Problem-Based Learning" will
be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday, June 20, and from 9 a.m.-noon,
Wednesday, June 21, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.

Financial sessions set for employees
The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program is sponsoring a seven-
part financial planning workshop series to be held from noon-1:30
p.m., Wednesdays, June 7-July 26.
"Take Control of Your Life by Taking Control of Your Finances"
will offer understandable and practical information about such topics
as basic budgeting, credit and banking, Social Security and Medicare,
investment and retirement planning and taxes. Each session will be
conducted by a different practicing financial professional, who will
offer a question-and-answer period and guide participants through
activities and worksheets in their financial notebooks.
This privately tested program has been successful in helping
participants take control of finances and ensure financial security.
The workshops are open to all members of the University
community, but seating is limited and attendance at each session is
required.

New Ark Academy for young students
Outstanding students in grades 5, 6 and 7 will have an
opportunity to work closely this summer with teachers and
professionals in the fields of science, mathematics, technology and
creative writing.
Students also will learn to navigate the Internet, create and
access databases and develop a multimedia presentation of their
research projects.
These activities will be conducted at the New Ark Academy, a two-
week session that will meet from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Mondays through
Fridays, July 24-Aug. 4, in Willard Hall Education Building.
The $350 tuition includes instruction, computer use, field
experiences and a final presentation program for parents. Parents must
arrange transportation. Students will be able to purchase lunch on
campus.
A $50 deposit should accompany the registration form. Space is

Ballroom dance lessons to begin
The University of Delaware Ballroom Dance Club will offer a six-
week session for beginners in ballroom dance. Lessons will run from 7-
8 p.m., Wednesdays, beginning June 7, in Pearson Hall gymnasium.
Participants will learn the jitterbug, swing, cha cha and fox trot.
Cost is $25.

Grace McFarren to exhibit paintings
Artist Grace McFarren will exhibit her abstract, realist and
nonobjective paintings from June 3-30 in Clayton Hall. A reception
will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 7. The exhibition and
reception are free and open to the public.
A member of the American Watercolor Society since 1972, McFarren
works in both watercolor and acrylic on Reemay, a substitute for
canvas. She relies on local scenery, flowers and figurative subjects
to dictate the medium she uses.
Active professionally in this area since she moved here in 1960,
she owned and operated the Wilmington Circulating Gallery of Paintings
at the former John Wanamaker store in Wilmington for 25 years.
Before coming to Delaware, she worked with instructors from the
Cleveland Institute of Art, including Clayton Batchel, Joseph
Jankowski and Marion Bryson.
Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Mondays-Fridays. For information

Women at work program topic
"Weaving Women's Lives in the Work Place" is the topic of a
presentation from noon-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, in the Rodney
Room of the Perkins Student Center.
Caryn McTighe Musil, director of the Project on the Status of
Women at the Association of American Colleges and Universities, will
be the featured speaker.
Her presentation will include information on new research on the
status of women in the academic workplace, differential patterns in
career paths among women, and how women and men can help create a new
work environment and more equitable structures in the academic
workplace.
All members of the University community are invited to attend.
Attendees may bring their lunch. Beverages and dessert will be
provided.
