Alumna, treasurer are recognized for service

The Board of Trustees passed two special resolutions honoring
service to the University. Recognition was presented to Catherine
Burke Flickinger of Wilmington, a member of the Board of Trustees from
1976-1995, and to J. Robert R. Harrison of Hockessin, treasurer of the
University who plans to retire next year.
The board also voted to change both their titles. Flickinger is
now an emeritus trustee and Harrison is now vice president and
treasurer.
Flickinger has served as vice chair of the board since 1978 and,
during her tenure, has chaired the Trustee/Faculty Committee on
Honorary Degrees and Awards and has served on the board's Executive
Committee and its committees on Education and Training, Student Life
and Athletics and Public Affairs and Advancement.
A 1940 UD graduate, she is one of four honorary life members of
the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association, where she has held
several offices, including president. A member of the UD Library
Associates, she is serving her third consecutive term on that board.
She co-chaired the Endowment Scholarship Campaign for the
University's College of Nursing, a campaign that raised more than $3
million, and she has served as a University representative to the
DIMER Board, which helps provide scholarships for Delaware students to
attend Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.
Since its establishment in 1976, the Catherine B. Flickinger
Education Scholarship Fund has provided 126 scholarships to UD
students pursuing careers in education.
The resolution read, in part, "Besides her many accomplishments,
Mrs. Flickinger's sense of responsibility as a board member cannot be
overstated. She is without peer in her record of attendance at
academic occasions, building dedications and award ceremonies. Both
the board and the University have been well served by her unparalleled
observance of tradition."
Harrison has served as University treasurer since 1973, and,
during his tenure, the University's budget grew from $54 million to
$378 million, the endowment grew from $103 million to $420 million and
the total investment from $134 million to $560 million, representing
increases of 600 percent, 308 percent and 318 percent, respectively.
He was involved in the founding in 1980, along with seven other
universities, of Genesis Ltd., a captive offshore insurance company,
which has saved the University millions of dollars in liability
premiums. This alliance is now owned by 15 universities.
Harrison received the 1988-89 E. A. Trabant Institutional Award
for Women's Equity for his mentoring of women employees in his
department, and he was cited for encouraging women to pursue
undergraduate and advanced degrees and offering counsel to help them
achieve career goals.
He himself received his second undergraduate degree, a bachelor's
degree in English, from Delaware in 1992.
The resolution read, in part, "... the Board of Trustees of the
University of Delaware express their genuine gratitude to J. Robert R.
Harrison for outstanding achievements as University treasurer and wish
him well in his further pursuits."
