Honorary degree, medal recipients named
The University Trustees approved recipients of an honorary degree
and five University Medals of Distinction at its semiannual meeting
May 23.
Selected to receive an honorary doctor of science degree is John
H. Gibbons, science adviser to President Bill Clinton and director of
the Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Named to receive University of Delaware Medals of Distinction
were
* Thurman G. Adams, a UD alumnus, president of T.G. Adams &
Sons and a state senator for the 19th Senatorial District
since 1972;
* Mary Kaye Carpenter, founder of the Pilot School for
students with learning disabilities and an active member of
the Delaware Foundation for Retarded Children;
* James C. Kakavas, UD professor emeritus and founder of the
Medical Technology Program;
* Ada Leigh Soles, teacher; academic adviser; Delaware state
representative; and senior adviser to Gov. Thomas Carper;
and
* Andrew J. Turner Jr., director of the Delaware Division of
Human Relations and vice president of the National
Association of Human Rights WorkersCommunity Advisory
Committee.
The trustees also passed a resolution consolidating two
University honors, the Medal of Merit and the Medal of Distinction,
into the Medal of Distinction. This award recognizes individuals who
have made humanitarian, cultural, intellectual or scientific
contributions to society, have achieved noteworthy success in their
professions or have given significant service to the community, state
or region.
