Housing, conferences now at home under one new roof

The shops and offices of the Housing and Conferences Operations
Center have been consolidated under one roof in a new home on New
London Road.
The single location contributes to greater efficiency and
coordination in serving the Newark and Wilmington campuses, according
to Tim Becker, assistant director for Facilities Management.
The units now occupy what was 9,000-square-foot, cold-storage
warehouse, which has been divided into two areas-5,400 square feet for
the trade shops and offices and 3,600 square feet for a storage area
for shop and project materials. Much of the renovation was carried out
by the operations center staff, which resulted in a considerable
savings, Becker said.
The new facility houses six shops for carpenters, upholsterers,
painters, the pest control staff, locksmiths and senior mechanics.
Networked data lines have been installed to update the
computerized work order system.
The center's work control, payroll and purchasing sections also
are located in the new facility, as well as the offices of Becker;
Vicki Paisley, assistant director for custodial services; Don
Diefendorf, assistant director for warehouse and purchasing; and Mike
Downs, maintenance manager.
"Centralizing these functions and the use of modern technology
make it easier for the staff to communicate and cooperate, and they
also streamline the entire operation," Becker said.
