Connick, students on VH-1
It was a class to remember when musical star Harry Connick Jr.
and members of his band visited Donald Hildebrandt's Jazz Ensemble
class.
Connick appeared at a sold-out concert in the Bob Carpenter
Center April 27, but that afternoon he appeared for a much smaller
group in the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
The first part of the class was interaction among Connick and the
students, who asked him several questions, Hildebrandt, professor of
music, said. During the second part of class, students, band members
and Connick, who sings and plays the piano and bass, joined together
for a jam session.
The visit was filmed for a Naked Cafe episode, which will
premier at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 20, on VH-1 (UD TV channel 45),
with repeat performances at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Sunday May 21, and at 1
a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday, May 22.
According to Naked Cafe spokesperson Nancy Lyon, the Jazz
Ensemble members and Hildebrandt were "terrific" and the Connick
segment is "one of the best" they've done.
The students enjoyed the contact with the well-known performer
and learned about the music world through talking to him, Hildebrandt
said. But, the most exciting part, he said, was playing and
improvising during the jam session with Connick and his band.
The class visit was coordinated by the Office of Public
Relations.
