Chemical engineering prof. honored with Chilton Award
Arthur B. Metzner, H. Fletcher Brown Professor Emeritus of
Chemical Engineering, received the 1995 Chilton Award from the
Wilmington section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers
(AIChE) at its annual dinner and awards ceremony, May 3, in Clayton
Hall.
The award recognizes his outstanding contributions to the
chemical engineering profession and honors the late Thomas H. Chilton,
an AIChE national president who, during his career at DuPont, led the
development of practical engineering research and was a major
influence in the development of the profession.
Metzner joined the Delaware chemical engineering faculty in 1953,
chaired the department from 1970-1977 and received the Francis P.
Alison Award from the University in 1981.
His national awards from AIChE include the Allan P. Colburn
Award, the William H. Walker Award, the Warren K. Lewis Award and the
designation, "Eminent." In addition, the October 1994 issue of
Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research was dedicated to Metzner,
who is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, one of the
highest professional distinctions in the field. He also received the
Bingham Medal from the Society of Rheology and serves as editor of the
Journal of Rheology.
He has published more than 100 articles, and his research
interests range over a variety of chemical engineering disciplines.
His accomplishments include the Otto-Metzner correlation for power
consumption in mixing of non-Newtonian fluids and landmark work on
turbulent flow and flow through porous media, as well as a classic
paper on the extensional viscosity of fiber suspensions.
