New software makes your PC run like an X-terminal
You can obtain a copy of eXceed/W, a software package that makes
your IBM PC or compatible function like an X terminal.
eXceed/W adds the graphical user interface available on X
terminals in public sites to your existing Microsoft Windows
environment. "For example, you can use the graphical interfaces to
UNIX versions of SAS, S-Plus, Mathematica, Maple, PV~Wave Point-and-
Click scientific visualization software, TeX previewers, PostScript
viewers and Mosaic, while also using such PC applications as Microsoft
Word and Excel, WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3," according to Dick
Sacher, user services. This greatly increases the utility of PCs
connected by Ethernet cards to the campus network.
eXceed/W, produced by Hummingbird Communications Ltd., was chosen
after extensive testing of many competing products by Information
Technologies, Sacher said.
Under the terms of the University's agreement with Hummingbird
Communications, faculty, staff and current full-time students can get
a copy of the software by bringing 10 high-density disks and a
University ID to the Microcomputing Resource Center, 040 Smith Hall,
Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Students also must bring a cash register receipt from the
University Bookstore showing they have purchased a copy of the eXceed
4 manual ($32 a copy).
Users will be notified of future upgrades of eXceed/W by e-mail.
If you have any questions regarding installation and use of the
program, call the Help Desk at 831-6000 or send e-mail to
consult@strauss.udel.edu.
