Wellness program expanded for employees
The Fightin' for Good Health! initiative, launched last year, has
been expanded to provide ongoing programs and services that promote
wellness.
The colleges of Nursing, Human Resources and Physical Education,
Athletics and Recreation have joined together to offer a series of
programs to encourage healthier lifestyles and to establish a Wellness
Center that assists employees in attaining their health goals. Fifty
"wellness dollars" are available to those employees who elect to
participate in University wellness programs.
The University's Wellness Center, located in 125 McDowell Hall,
offers health screenings (blood pressure, vision, etc.), health-
related information and counseling on an individual basis.
Faculty, staff and students from each of the participating
colleges will be on hand from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday,
Sept. 20-21, at the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center to kick
off the employee Wellness Program. University wellness opportunities
will be highlighted while participants sample healthy snacks,
participate in health screenings, gather literature about health-
related topics, meet the University Wellness Center staff and
participate in the Fightin' for Good Health! surprise drawing.
Employees will be encouraged to register for wellness programs
using on-site computer terminals. These offerings are listed in the
chart at the right.
The Wellness Center will be highlighting a different health-
related theme every month during the 1994-95 academic year. The
"kickoff" is the first such event.
Upcoming themes will include self-examination for breast and
testicular cancer, managing stress, promoting healthy holiday
nutrition, coping with addictions (smoking, alcohol and drugs),
maintaining heart health, practicing low back health, improving
physical fitness and controlling blood pressure.
Employees are urged to share their ideas and health-related
interests with the Wellness Center staff.
They are Evelyn Hayes, RN, professor of nursing, Veronica Pick,
fitness specialist, and Debra Dempsey, RN, graduate student in the
Family Nurse Practitioner Program. Call 831-8388.
