Jumper Classic set near Laurel Hall
Horses and riders from across the country will gather in Newark
on Sunday, Oct. 2, for the University's second annual Jumper Classic,
to be held on the grounds of Laurel Hall.
Proceeds will benefit the Bob Carpenter Center and the
University's intercollegiate athletic program.
Activities will begin at 10 a.m. with the $5,000 Junior-Amateur
Jumper Classic, a National Grand Prix League (NGL) /Sprint Junior-
Amateur event.
A special exhibition is planned for 1 p.m., and the $25,000
University of Delaware Grand Prix/Rolex/NGL event gets under way at
1:30 p.m.
Tickets are $8 for general admission and $5 for students and
senior citizens. Reserved ringside seating, which must be purchased in
advance, is available for $100 a seat. Tables, which seat eight, may
be reserved for $600. Both tables and reserved seating include lunch.
Last year, the University's first Jumper Classic attracted 42
horses to its Junior-Amateur and Grand Prix events, with horses and
riders from 12 states and Canada. Nearly 750 persons attended.
Show jumping is the leading equestrian activity in the United
States. Each year, more than 600,000 horses compete regularly in
recognized (those sanctioned by the American Horse Shows Association)
and unrecognized competitions across the country.
Honorary chairpersons of the University's event are D.D. and
Michael Matz of Collegeville, Pa. Co-chairpersons are Sydney Lindley
and Laurie Jakubauskas, both of Greenville. Other committee members
are Allan Griffiths of Elkton, Md., Louise Roselle of Newark and Missy
Veghte of Salem, N.J.
