Web helps students & alumni plan for future
Students and alumni of the University are weaving their way
through an exciting web of career, research and graduate school
information.
"Last fall we became aware of the World Wide Web as an option for
getting this type of information to students as quickly as possible,"
Jack Townsend, director of the Career Services Center, said.
Whether they are interested in graduate or professional schools
or employment, students are using the Web to locate information about
their fields of choice. "Information found on the Web is proving to be
valuable in helping people identify jobs, research opportunities and
graduate schools," Townsend explained.
The Career Services Center (CSC) has posted information on the
gopher portion of U-Discover! for over a year, but the new Web
information has been available since January, Townsend explained.
"Students are finding that the communication works very quickly.
They can respond to job leads right over the Web," Townsend said. "The
Web moves information between students and employers much more quickly
than the traditional, hard-copy process."
The career information the CSC has included in its U-Discover!
Web page "emphasizes all aspects of career development," Townsend
said. "We included links to many different kinds of resources, not
just online job postings."
Rather than viewing slide after slide of microfiche, students can
now research graduate schools from desktop computers. This online
information about corporations helps students prepare for job
interviews by using the Web to familiarize themselves with prospective
employers.
To use the CSC Web page, point your Web browser (for example,
Mosaic, Netscape or lynx) at the following URL:

In addition to the resources on the Web page, the CSC has several
other information services available in its Raub Hall facility.
PC ALEX
ALEX, the automated labor exchange search system, enables job
seekers to search by military specialty, job code and federal job
opportunities.
Jobhunt
Using Jobhunt, students and alumni can view and search for
employers; create letters with employer's address, date, and
salutation; and print address labels and envelopes.
FOCIS
The Federal Occupation and Career Information System allows job
seekers
to practice taking federal employment examinations, identify work
interests, search for a specific occupation or agency or learn how to
locate a federal job and search for training.
"Using the various online services available at Career Services,
I've been able to direct my search for jobs in this region," junior
Colleen Modesto said.
"Using these electronic resources is just one of the skills we
encourage students and alumni to learn," Townsend said. These tools
may some day become the primary means for students and employers to
'meet.'
However, employers highly value skills such as oral communication
and interpersonal skills; therefore, we encourage students and alumni
to think of using the new technology as an extension of their
traditional job-seeking, research and communications skills."
