Multimedia users join together in new forum
More than 50 faculty and a dozen support staff attended the first
Multimedia Users Group (MUG) meeting Friday, April 21, with
presentations focusing on "Getting Started with Multimedia."
"The purpose of the MUG is to provide a forum for multimedia
users to share expertise, techniques and new developments with one
another," said Fred Hofstetter, chairperson of the group.
At the first MUG meeting:
* Hofstetter presented an overview of multimedia concepts;
* Veteran multimedia user Paul Sammelwitz, animal science and
agricultural biochemistry, discussed how he selected the
multimedia system he currently is using;
* George Mulford, multimedia specialist at the Instructional
Technology Center, presented a variety of options for adding
video capabilities to a multimedia system;
* George Harding, private consultant on multimedia, gave a
nuts and bolts presentation about setting up new multimedia
equipment;
* Multimedia producer John Row presented his compilation of
the "best buys" in multimedia hardware from his study of
local advertising; and
* Bob Hodson, life and health sciences, related his experience
selecting and installing a multimedia upgrade kit to a
system originally purchased for other purposes.
The April 21 meeting was videotaped by the Center for Teaching
Effectiveness. To arrange to view the tape, stop by or call the center
in 111 Pearson Hall, 831-2027.
In addition to prepared talks, Hofstetter added, "We intend that
each meeting will have time for an open discussion of other multimedia
issues, concerns, questions or announcements." The MUG also will
"meet" on the Internet through the use of bulletin boards and
electronic mail.
The next MUG meeting, which will deal with multimedia design
issues, will be held on Friday, May 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the multimedia
lecture hall in Purnell 115.
Presenters include Charles Link, economics; Larry Peterson,
music; and John Courtright, communications. A presentation
illustrating the five basic multimedia design paradigms also is on the
program.
