'MAD Magazine' in UD Gallery

Humor in a Jugular Vein: The Art, Artists and Artifacts of MAD
Magazine from the Collection of Mark J. Cohen," opens at the
University Gallery at Old College Sunday, May 5, and continues through
June 16.
For 40 years, MAD Magazine has been a forum for parody and satire
of American popular culture. The exhibit showcases many objects from
Cohen's personal collection, including magazine art, artist self-
portraits and other MAD-oriented collectibles.
MAD Magazine began its history as a comic book, Tales Calculated
to Drive You MAD. Following censure from the Kefauver Committee on
Juvenile Delinquency in 1954 and the comic book industry's imposing of
self-censorship in the Comics Code Authority, MAD transformed itself
into a magazine.
The format, started to bypass any censorship attempt, has
survived, becoming an important part of American culture.
Cohen and other commentators, including MAD Magazine artists John
Caldwell, Paul Peter Porges and Bob Clarke, will participate in a
panel discussion on the impact of MAD Magazine on American popular
culture from 4-6 p.m., Friday, May 12, in Room 006 of the Willard Hall
Education Building. The talk will be followed by a reception in the
University Gallery at Old College.
On Saturday, May 13, Cohen will give a presentation, "How To
Think Funny," at 2 p.m. in 202 Old College.
"Humor in a Jugular Vein" is an academic project in the UD's
Museum Studies Program, which enables graduate students in other
departments to gain museum experience through a certificate program.
The University Gallery is located on the second floor of Old
College. All gallery events are free and open to the public. Gallery
hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 1-5 p.m.,
Saturday and Sunday. The University Gallery is wheelchair accessible.
