Blue Devils assistant to lead Blue Hen hoopsters

Former Duke University assistant coach Mike Brey is the new head
coach of the Blue Hen men's basketball program at Delaware. Edgar N.
Johnson, director of athletics, made the announcement late yesterday
afternoon.
Brey, 36, a graduate of George Washington University, becomes the
21st coach in Delaware's 90-year basketball history. He replaces Steve
Steinwedel, who announced his resignation March 7, after leading
Delaware to a 163-121 record and two NCAA tournament appearances over
the past 10 seasons.
A total of 103 candidates applied for the position, Johnson said.
"We are extremely excited that Mike Brey has agreed to become our
new head basketball coach," Johnson said. "Mike was our top candidate
all along. He is an outstanding individual whom we feel was the best
assistant coach in college basketball.
"What impressed us most about Mike was his knowledge and
enthusiasm for the game, his recruiting contacts and his past success.
We are pleased to get a person with his background and experience to
coach at Delaware. We are confident he will keep our program moving
forward."
Brey comes to Delaware after serving the past eight seasons as
assistant coach under Mike Krzyzewski at national power Duke. After
Brey joined the Duke staff in 1987-88, the Blue Devils advanced to the
NCAA's Final Four six times and won national titles in 1991 and 1992.
The Blue Devils posted a record of 216-65 during Brey's tenure.
"Mike Brey has been an integral part of our successes at Duke
over the past eight seasons," Krzyzewski said of his top assistant.
"In that time we have been to six Final Fours, four national
championship games and won two national championships, none of which
would have been possible without Mike. I have depended greatly on his
knowledge of the game and his ability to work with people. He's got
the total package, and I feel bad that I won't be able to work with
him closely in the future."
A native of Rockville, Md., Brey played his high school
basketball at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md., under head
coach Morgan Wootten and helped the team to a record of 55-9 as a two-
year letter winner.
He attended Northwestern (La.) State for three seasons in 1977-
80, before transferring to George Washington University for his final
season. During his college career, he was a three-year starting guard
and led his team in assists and steals all three years.
He was named captain and selected as Most Valuable Player at
George Washington his senior year.
Brey earned his degree from George Washington University in 1982
and began his coaching career later that year as head coach of the
DeMatha High School junior varsity team. Brey assisted Wootten for
five seasons between 1982-87, helping the Stags post an overall 139-22
record, win four conference championships, two city titles and a USA
Today number one national ranking.
In addition to his coaching experience at Duke, Brey spent part
of the summer of 1990 in Nottingham, England, as a clinic teacher. In
1993, he assisted Duke associate coach Pete Guadet on the Atlantic
Coast Conference Select Team tour of Canada.
Brey and his wife, Tish, a former volleyball standout at George
Washington University, have two children. Their son, Kyle, is 8 and
their daughter, Callie, is 5.
